Replace existing printers & Enhance driver's license security
The biggest challenge faced by the Driver License Examination Center (KoROAD) was to increase driver license security and reduce counterfeiting and fraud.
They desperately needed multi-factor security and higher print quality to combat fraud.
KoROAD initiated a plan to replace its legacy printers with more reliable units and to decentralize production to its branch offices.
KoROAD also wishes to modify their driving license to be recognized internationally by adding the English language on the backside of the card.
These changes led to the more adoption of the SMART-70 series printers.
The SMART-70 series was chosen because of its improved physical and printed security features, simple maintenance, and large capacity features.

The use of the SMART-70 Series from IDP is a significant example of its renowned technology and security for one of the most important card documents in the Nation.
Other cards include the resident registration card and passport.
KoROAD uses highly secure and customized credential issuance software to manage and print your driver’s licenses.
This system is designed for high-speed mass issuance at multiple locations.
IDP worked closely with KoROAD to integrate their printing and security features to optimize the complete solution and create the most secure card to date.
After reviewing the customer’s needs, IDP proposed the SMART-70 (IPHL) configuration.
What is IPL & IPHL?"It is highly scalable, secured with physical locks, and easy to configure."
Before 2019, Korean Driver’s license only required simplex / single-sided printing. Due to this, IDP supplied the SMART-70SL (IPL) combination.
As KoROAD’s needs shifted to double-sided printing to accommodate International Driver’s License recognition with English information printed on the back of the cards, it was very simple to upgrade their system.
The unique modular concept of the SMART-70’s allowed KoROAD to easily and simply add a Hybrid Flipper to its existing system - changing its configuration from a SMART-70SL (IPL) to a SMART-70DL (IPHL) in just a few minutes.
To optimize speed and efficiency, each SMART-70 module works simultaneously and independently.
For example, while a card is being printed, the previously printed card is encoded or laminated.
The provided exit card stacker is sturdy and can hold up to 80 sequentially printed cards, allowing KoRoad agents to quickly and easily deliver a finished card to a waiting customer at a distributed-issuance facility.
Today, 27 SMART-70DL (IPHL) systems perfectly meet the updated demands of KoROAD and the Korean driver's licenses nationwide.
